Where Teaching Meets Technology

Shrimp and The Colonoscopy

I know with a title like that you have to wonder.  An amazing animal that isn’t too well known is the peacock mantis shrimp.  Besides it’s fascinating colors, the peacock mantis shrimp has an attack that is thirty times faster than the blink of an eye, with the devastating force of a bullet.  But that is not all, watch this video and see how scientists are using biomimicry of this fascinating animal to help save lives.  Don’t worry – the doctor isn’t going to punch a hole in your colon – they mimic how the mantis shrimp’s vision.

Doodle4Google

Google has announced this year’s finalists for the Doodle4Google contest!  This year’s choices are probably the best collection of doodles that I have ever seen.  While no one in Madison was selected as a finalist this year, the state winner from Connecticut, Sarah Harrison, from Brunnell High School in Stratford has an absolutely amazing doodle! I love the background shadows she put in her doodle and what a great message.

Go to the Doodle4Google website and vote for your favorite!

Here is a small sampling of some of the Madison entries this year:

Moonbots!

What is moonbots?  The MOONBOTS Challenge is an international online competition encouraging youth 8-17 years old to participate, form a team and learn about lunar exploration and use STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and their imagination to create their own lunar robotic mission and present it to others. Teams win robotic toolkits and a great trip!

Kids work in groups of 2 to 4 and create a video explaining what they would leave behind on the moon.  Teams must be registered by March 15th – so you need to act quickly if you are interested in participating.  Once your team(s) is/are registered, they need to create a short video by March 30th explaining what they’d leave behind.

Check out this video that explains a little bit about the challenge and then check out moonbots.org.  Please let me know if you’d like my coaching help in supporting you and your students.
